CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Xavier Bourgault scored at 2:50 of overtime to lift the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 4-3 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders in a game that featured a wild finish.
But a lot more drama was to follow. With 1:11 remaining, after a conversation by the officials, the Islanders’ Xavier Simoneau was assessed a minor penalty for what was listed as a faceoff infraction on the official game summary on the league website. The penalty, which appeared to be called by a linesman, came off a draw at centre ice as Simoneau attempted to control a puck in the air.
That call drew a loud chorus of boos from the sellout crowd of 3,641 fans, which only got louder after Pierrick Dubé scored with six seconds remaining in regulation time to tie the game. Fans continued to show their displeasure with the officiating by throwing garbage on the ice after the Cataractes scored the game-winning goal.
The Cataractes opened the scoring at 5:49 of the first period as Dallas Stars’ draft pick Mavrik Bourque beat left-handed Islanders goaltender Franky Lapenna to the stick side.
