Next stop, Brookline: Holden's Fran Quinn wins playoff to qualify for US Open

But the long day proved worth it for the 57-year-old Holden resident. He earned his first U.S. Open berth since 2014 with a birdie on Monday’s second playoff hole of final qualifying, and he’ll be playing next week at The Country Club.

At the 36-hole U.S. Open final qualifying at Century and Old Oaks country clubs, Quinn shot consecutive rounds of 1-under 69, which helped create an eight-way playoff for the final three berths in next week’s championship.

Co-medalist honors and the first two berths went to amateurs Chris Gotterup (67-70) and Caleb Manuel (69-68) at 3-under 137. Gotterup is expected to turn pro before arriving in Brookline.

Joining Quinn in the playoff were amateurs Michael Thorbjornsen of Wellesley and Benjamin James of Milford, Connecticut, along with Brandon Matthews, Haraldur Magnus, Kelly Kraft, Michael Sweeney and Chandler Phillips, all at 138. Phillips shot a second-round 65 to move into the tie for third.
