CF Montréal advances to Canadian Championship semis with 3-0 win

CF Montréal got all three goals from Sunusi Ibrahim for a 3-0 victory over Hamilton’s Forge FC. Ibrahim is the first player in club history to register a hat-trick in a Canadian Championship match. Matko Miljevic assisted on all three goals.

It was the first match in CF Montréal’s defence of the Voyageurs Cup, which it won last year by beating Toronto FC 1-0 in the Canadian Championship final to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League. FC Montréal then lost to Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the quarter-finals.

CF Montréal will now meet Toronto FC in the Voyageurs Cup semifinals at BMO Field. That game will be scheduled between June 21 and 23. Toronto FC beat Halifax’s Wanderers FC 2-1 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals.

CF Montréal dominated play against Forge FC with 58 per cent possession and 17 shots, while the Hamilton team only had five shots. Ibrahim scored two goals in the first half — in the 14th minute and 22nd minute — before completing his hat trick four minutes into the second half. Since joining MLS in 2012, Montreal is unbeaten at Saputo Stadium in Canadian Championship play with an 11-0-5 record.
